CUPE Local 53 represents over 500 full time and part time employees at the Town of Whitby & the Town of Uxbridge. We are in your neighbourhoods maintaining roads, clearing snow, collecting waste, rescuing animals, trimming street trees, reviewing and inspecting new construction, and keeping our parks and facilities clean and beautiful.

CUPE Local 53 members serve as clerks, cleaners, lifeguards, gardeners, labourers, by-law officers, inspectors, crossing guards, program coordinators, planners, and many other occupations. Each one of these jobs is important. We also ensure that the facilities are welcoming, fun and safe for you and your family to enjoy, as we ensure business runs smoothly and efficiently within the Town of Whitby & the Town of Uxbridge.

As part of CUPE, we stand with more than half a million public sector workers across the country. We are affiliated with Durham Northumberland CUPE District Council, Durham Labour Council and the Ontario Federation of Labour. Part-time Updates/ Facility Closures

Due to the recent closure mandated by the Provincial Government, the Union is working with HR in regards to the hours for all current active staff. Because this closure is short term in nature, your hours will be significantly reduced or “zeroed” out until the time our facilities are able to reopen.

What does this mean for you? You can still claim Employment Insurance (EI) but must request your Record of Employment (ROE) from HR. You can do so by emailing either your HR representative, or hr@whitby.ca

As your hours are zeroed out, this will speed up the recall process for all recently sent home employees. If you were recently working or recently recalled before the closure, you will be notified when your next scheduled shift is prior to reopening our facilities.


At this time, this is the most recent information we have available (subject to change) and you shall be receiving additional information from the HR department in the near future.
